Sorry if this might sound silly 
But I wish there could be a scene, where Queen Athena could transform a young vertion of Eric into a young merman ( Could also be a merchild, if Ariel also is a child = same age
) and accepts him as her own son and love of her daughter Ariel. Would be so great. 
Like a Queen / mother showing her love for her new child be making him a merman and there by into the son she never had
